New Third Ward Beer Garden opening in Catalano Square in Milwaukee

Nov 15, 2023

Milwaukee's Third Ward is a summertime destination, whether you're stopping by for food or drinks before a Summerfest show, doing a little shopping, having dinner or weekend brunching.

And now, there's another reason to pay it a visit. It's getting a new beer garden.

Here's what to know about the new Third Ward Beer Garden, including its location, hours, menu and more, according to a news release.

The Third Ward Beer Garden is in Catalano Square, which is located on Broadway at Menomonee Street.

"This beer garden is a place for our neighborhood residents and visitors to come together, raise a glass and celebrate summer in one of our favorite Third Ward parks," Jim Plaisted, executive director of the Historic Third Ward Association, said in the news release. "With local brews and local musicians drawing beer lovers to Catalano Square, we are excited to show off all the incredible businesses that populate this area of the Third Ward. From Club Charlie's, Copper Turtle Brewery & Taverne and Riley's — all located just off the Square — to the nearby MARN Art + Culture Hub, MIAD campus, and the shops and eateries on Erie Street and more, there's truly something for everyone."

The Third Ward Beer Garden will be open from June 9 through September.

3 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3 to 9 p.m. Fridays, noon to 9 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The Third Ward Beer garden will feature a menu of local craft and imported beer, wine and ready-to-drink cocktails, the news release said.

Draft offerings will include Third Space Brewing's Happy Place, Frog Weiss and Upward Spiral; Weihenstephan's Original, Hefeweissbier and Dunkel; and Hinterland Door County Cherry Wheat, according to the beer garden's website.

Canned beverages will include Michelob Ultra, Bud Light Seltzer Black Cherry, and Cutwater Margarita and Vodka Mule.

Wine options will include a red, as well as Casa Cortelli Prosecco.

Water and bagged snacks will also be available.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Historic Third Ward Association and BID No. 2, and will support improvements to Catalano Square, per the release.

The beer garden will have a custom two-level pop-up container bar with a rooftop stage.

Seating will also be available at German-style picnic tables and high-top tables crafted from beer barrels.

Yes, there will be live acoustic music on most Thursdays at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m.

The Third Ward Beer Garden will be managed by Third Ward residents Leanne and Dave Hock.

Leanne is the owner and general manager of The Hock Group, which includes the Bud Pavilion and Wednesday Night Live, a popular summertime live music series, at Wisconsin State Fair Park, the news release said.

Dave, a consultant in the beverage industry, has more than 30 years of beverage and hospitality experience. He worked with Beechwood Sales and Service, and was CEO of Milwaukee Brewing Company and Future Libations, per the release.

"Like other neighborhood beer gardens around the city, this beer garden will be a social gathering spot," Leanne said in the release. "We are excited to welcome our Third Ward neighbors and visitors to enjoy summer days and evenings with friends and family, cold beverages, great music and lots of good cheer. It's what Milwaukee summers are all about."

The beer garden's website, thirdwardbeergarden.com, will include info on the beer garden's activities, if the beer garden will be closed due to weather or special events, and more.
